This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend a screening of a Sundance Film Festival movie. It was a Russian film documenting a woman's struggle with her conflicting emotions. It was a thought-provoking and intense movie. I enjoyed it, and the whole experience. What follows is the synopsis from the web site.

Elena has a warm but passionless late-in-life marriage with wealthy Vladimir, to whom she is more caretaker than spouse. Each has grown children from previous relationships, but Vladimir is dedicated to his distant, spoiled daughter and resents having to provide financial aid to Elena’s hapless, unemployed son and his struggling family. As Vladimir’s health declines, and he makes concrete plans to leave everything to his own offspring, Elena must decide swiftly between her loyalty to her husband and her allegiance to her own flesh and blood.

Part domestic thriller, part morality play, all a comment on contemporary Russian class warfare, Elena delivers an intense and haunting experience, offering keen insight into human nature. Throughout, the chilling tension is sustained and heightened by Philip Glass’s striking music and Zvyagintsev’s stark visual style.

January is usually the time for resolutions and reflection. It is for me as well but for very different reasons. Sixteen years ago this month I lost my Dad to alzhiemers disease. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of him. But it is much worse in January.
He taught me how to ride a bike and a horse. He taught me how to shoot a gun and how to swim. But he taught me so much more than that. He taught me to always greet people with a smile and when being introduced to offer a firm handshake. That may not seem like a big deal but it surprises me how often people seem startled when I offer a hand. I can hear his voice in my head.. "good for you gail".
He taught me how to handle grief and fear and also the importance of laughter. He could make an occasion out of the most mundane activity. Whether it be pulling weeds or cutting wood it was never dull. He would tell family stories or discuss the current events of the day and before long the chore was done!
But the most important lesson he taught me was to not look back with regret but to look to the future with anticipation.
So Dad.. I am going to look at this New Year through your eyes and eagerly await the good to come.

Books.... Books... Books

Do you like to read? I love it. This year I read quite a variety of books and would like to share some of them with you. My tastes range from mysteries and thrillers to historical fiction with a little romance thrown in.

"Before I Go To Sleep" By: S.J. Watson
Can you imagine waking up every morning not knowing where you are or who the man is sleeping next to you. That is the premise for this book. It is an exceptional thriller that kept me up late finishing it.

"The Book Thief" By: Marcus Zusak
This book is set in Germany during WW 2. It chronicles the story of an adopted little girl and her thirst for knowledge. With "death" as the narrator it gives the reader a very different point of view. This book is very well written, the characters are believable and unforgettable.

"Deception Point" By: Dan Brown
Dan Brown does it again with this action packed thriller. The plot twists and turns kept me guessing and reading until the very end.

"Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" By: James Ford
This is truly a love story. The narrative shifts between 1986 and 1940 in Seattle Washington. The reader is given a glimpse of life as a Chinese American and his struggles. It is somewhat predictable but well worth the read.

"The Help" By: K. Sockett
This story is set in the troubled South of the 1960's. The attitudes and historical events are real which makes this book come to life. "The Help" is compassionate without resorting to cliches or stereotyping. Read the book before you see the movie.. it is a delightful read!

"A Painted House" By: John Grisham
John Grishman is best known for his legal thrillers but this book he takes an entirely different direction. The story is set in rural Arkansas in 1952. It is narrated by 7 year old Luke the son of a cotton farmer. The hardships and triumphs are the focus of this book as seen through the eyes of Luke. Grisham is a master story-teller!

"Jane Eyre" By: Charlotte Bronte
There are only a few books that I want to read again.. but his is one of them. This book is so well crafted---the language exquisite and the story-telling impeccable. Some of the issues that Miss Bronte brings to the fore are:
*the treatment of women and children
* religious faith and hypocrisy (and the difference between the two)
* the nature of love and passion

~Layaway Angels~

By now I am sure you have heard of the "Layaway Angels" who are rescuing Christmas for needy families across the country. I think they embody the true spirit of Christmas. These mystery donors are visiting stores and paying the balance on layaway accounts and the recipients never learn the identities of the donors. How cool is that!! This whole things started in Grand Rapids about three weeks ago and it has quickly spread across the nation. Generosity appears to be contagious. These Angels will never know the full impact they have had but you can bet that on Christmas morning there will be squeals of joy from lots of happy children.

Random Acts

Today was one of those days… you know the kind of day I’m talking about.. the one you would just as soon forget. It started out when the trusted weather man who said there would just be partly cloudy skies.. and low and behold when I drove to work the roads were icy and a light snow was falling. I got to work okay and sitting at my desk I opened my purse to take out my cell phone.. But it was no- where to be found. I searched my desk, emptied my purse and searched the room. I went back to my car and looked under the seat.. But I couldn’t reach all the crevices affectionately known as the Bermuda Triangle of the Subaru. I decided that it must have slipped out of my purse when I was shopping at Costco the day before. When the store opened I called and spoke to a very nice man who checked the lost and found. Much to my dismay it hadn’t been turned in. My last option was to wait until my husband came home to check the car for me. I put it out of my mind for most of the day, and when I turned onto my street I noticed a fresh-faced young high school student in my driveway with a snow shovel in hand. He had just moments ago finished shoveling the whole thing. I rolled down my window and thanked him profusely. He just smiled and said “no worries”. He headed down the street with the shovel resting on his shoulder. That simple act.. (Well maybe not so simple—the driveway is quite large) did so much to lighten my mood. When my husband arrived home he found the phone in matter of moments.

The day started out in frustration and ended with a smile thanks to a stranger.. And my husband. Thanks to both of you!!!

I survived

I survived the masses at the mall!!! The parking lot however, was more like an obstacle course with every conceivable square foot used to squeeze out another space.
The stores weren't too crowded. After fortifying ourselves with a latte we were ready to shop. In two short hours the task was complete. Color me relieved.
Now all the remains is:
1. the wrapping
2. the baking
3. the decorating
4. sending out the cards.

I came across these vintage ads and I couldn't help but chuckle. My how times have changed.

Nothing says Christmas like firearms..

I don't know if I would be happier with a Hoover... LOL

I guess any behavior can be justified!

Ready.. Set... Shop

Thanksgiving is over… I know because the left-overs are gone. There is no turning back. Christmas is fast approaching. Do you have your shopping done??? Have you started?? I vow every year to shop early and be done.. but somehow it doesn’t always work out that way. I will admit to a few purchases, but the bulk of the shopping will be done this weekend. Amanda and I are going to be brave and venture into the mall..(yikes)! I know there will be lines at the checkstand, parking will be a challenge, but in spite of the crowds I think it will be fun( I have been accused of having a strange sense of fun).

Happy Thanksgiving

There are so many things to be thankful for… I think its important to remember things both big and small, so here goes.

First and foremost I am so thankful for the love I can share with my family. My son Matt and daughter in law Amanda are incredible young adults. They are loving and patient parents and so much fun to be with. Then there is Emery and Quinn.. seeing the world through their eyes is magical for me. I love their enthusiasm and innocence.

My husband is my rock. When the world seems to be crashing in around me he is there. I can always count on him. Thank you honey.

Living in Utah means you are surrounded by some of the most incredible scenery in the world. The mountains are literally in my backyard. I’m grateful I live close enough that I can take a day hike or go camping.

I’m grateful that the “check engine” light on my car went out. We took it the dealer and he said it wasn’t anything to be worried about and to ignore it. Now that it isn’t shining in my face I’m not worried anymore.

I’m thankful for my friends. They have helped me through some tough times and I so appreciate the love and support I got from them.

I’m thankful for flannel sheets on a cold night and hot coffee in the morning.

I love my job.. it challenges and inspires me.

A Lovely Day

Today was one of those beautiful fall days that you want to put in a jar and pull out in the middle of January when we are knee deep in snow. I love fall.. the angle of the sun, the brisk evenings and warm days. Fall brings with it a sense of nostalgia.. that's a good thing. It reminds me of my childhood in California. Carefree days!
I know that soon the weather will change.. and snow will be upon us.. but for now.. let me enjoy the fabulous color show that Mother Nature puts on every year.

This week was difficult. I had to say goodbye to a four-legged friend, my little cat Sadie. She had been sick for over a week and when the vet examined her she found a tumor on her pancreas. I thought we would just take her in and the vet would prescribe some meds and she would be fine. But that wasn't to be. We made the painful decision to let her go. I stayed with her through it all.. and kissed her goodbye.
I miss her... and yet I know it was the only thing we could have done.
but that doesn't make it any easier.

She was a unique little creature. She loved to carry a tiny terrycloth ball in her mouth. I believe she thought it was her baby. We would find it in front of the food dish, in the water bowl and she would curl up with it. She had a very persistent meow and beautiful green eyes. Her favorite perch was the top cushion of the sofa. She could keep a watchful eye on everything around her.

School has started...

and there are so many things to get used to again. New routines from a new district. New students to get to know and new programs to learn. But I have to say I love it all. There are some amazing teachers at my school. They are creative and patient and manage to do it all and make it look easy. One of these teachers was teaching a lesson on character description and asked me to help..( I was her visual aid). It was decided that I would put on a disguise and enter her classroom, take something and leave. Since this was a shared experience for all of the students they should be able to give a good discription of the intruder. The hardest part for me was coming up with a good enough disguise so that I wouldn't be recognized. With a little help I came up with a head-to-toe outfit.
First I put on a pair of cover-alls that belonged to my husband. Then I pulled my hair up under a hat, donned some fake glasses with a nose and mustache attached, and changed my shoes. My friend Cathy suggested that I stuff one shoulder with a sweatshirt giving me an unsightly hump on my back. I looked like an odd combination of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mr. Goodwrench.
I entered the classroom quietly and at first the students didn't notice me.. but when they did they were at first surprised, then a little afraid. I was careful not to speak because I didn't want them to recognize my voice. I walked slowly with a limp, stopping at a few desks and taking a pencil box then giving it back to the students. When I reached the front of the class I took a microphone that belonged to the teacher. There were a few outbursts of protest from some of the students but they were so startled by the bold action that they stayed seated.
During all of this the teacher was out of the room. When she entered the room the students told her of my actions and she went and got another teacher to help escort me from the room. (of course all of this was arranged ahead of time).
The next task was to find the intruder and get back the microphone. They put "wanted posters" and large drawings all over the school. A few days later the principal came into the classroom with the microphone and said he had apprehended the thief.
For me, it was a very interesting experience! I am glad I had the opportunity to do it. As for the kids.. some of them think it was me, but they aren't quite sure and I'm not tellin!

All good things must come to an end.. isn't that what they say?? Well my summer vacation is almost over and I just can't believe it. I know I say this every year and every year here I am amazed at how fast it came and went.
I had to get in one more mountain visit before the routine of the classroom sets in. We went to Albion Basin .. sadly this wasn't a unique idea. It was very crowded but we managed to find a grassy spot with some flat rocks to use as a table for our picnic lunch. The profusion of wild flowers
dotted the hillside, while a few puffy clouds decorated the sky. It was an absolutely beautiful day.
This was my last hurrah of the summer.

Salt Lake City 1940..ish

Last week I went shopping in antique stores on 300 South in Salt Lake City. I love poking around and looking at dishes, glassware, lamps and furniture that were once the height of fashion. I find it kind of amusing (or maybe a little sad) that some of the gifts I received as wedding presents are now high priced antiques or at the very least considered “vintage”.

After browsing in RetroRose ( one of my favorite stores) and Jitterbug(a store that specializes in antique toys) I walked across the street with no particular destination in mind. It had rained earlier in the day and the air still felt thick but the sky was a bright blue. I passed an old Catholic church with a crumbling foundation. Small children were playing in the front yard among flowers that needed tending.

I came to large 3 story red brick apartment building. It is U shaped with an enormous green courtyard that faces the street. White shutters adorn the windows while a black iron fence adds a bit of security. Three words flashed in my mind “This is it”. This was the building that my parents lived in shortly after getting married. I was always aware that they had lived in the city but never made the effort to find the exact location. Now here I was looking at the building and my mind is going around in circles. I tried to imagine what the apartment looked like…. What floor did they live on?...... What was their daily routine?...... All of these facts are now lost to me with their demise.

As I stood there mesmerized by this piece of the past I felt a small connection to them.. which in reality is a connection to who I am.

Stay in your own backyard. That is exactly what we decided to do this summer, literally and figuratively. Instead of traveling to some distant locale we are enjoying some of the beautiful places and interesting sights that this area has to offer. We started with a short hike in Bell Canyon. The trail head is 10 minutes from my front door. After an easy 1 ½ mile hike you see this lake surrounded by pine trees and scrub oak. It is fed from the melting snow in the higher elevations.

We ate lunch and headed home.

Every morning I go for a walk in my favorite park. It is located about 2 miles from my house and sits on top of a mesa overlooking the valley. I remember when this park was first opened. The trees looked like sticks that had just been stuck in the ground. They seemed so fragile and vulnerable. A small gust of wind would conquer them. A heavy snow would lay them flat. Now however the trees have substantial trunks and they offer generous amounts of shade. When I am walking it is hard not to be distracted by the surrounding beauty. To the east are mountains and to the north you can see Salt Lake City. I took this photo as the sun was coming up. Such serenity!

Today I went to the matinee and saw "Midnight in Paris." Woody Allen wrote and directed this romantic comedy. I have not always been a fan of his but this movie is charming without being overly sentimental. It is insightful, philosophical and very funny. I highly recommend it! If you get a chance .. go see this one

I went with my good friend Cathy and we both agreed it was a great way to spend the afternoon.

~ Odds and Ends~

I have been absent from blogging for a few months. Some of my friends have wondered what I was up to.. so here are a few photo's of my adventures of late.

First, my son Matt asked if we would be interested in having a a bee hive in our yard. He and his family have one and let me say the honey we have received is delicious. We agreed as long as Matt is the bee keeper. Bee's are amazing! They have a 5 mile radius that they travel.( I had no idea).

Notice the fire helmet/bee veil :) The small green box is the hive.

My husband wanted me to learn to shoot a gun. Not just any ole gun... NOOO, but a sawed-off shot gun. Now I have a healthy respect for guns.. but not a desire to get real acquainted with them however I agreed to give it a "shot". I was nervous and a bit scared but I kept my promise. I am getting in touch with my inner Annie Oakley..:)

I love to work in my garden but this year has been a bit challenging. We had a very wet spring and everything seems to be about a month behind. It is just now finally starting to look like a garden!

Have you ever had "Beer Butt Chicken"?If you haven't... you must try this. This is the best chicken I have ever tasted.. moist and delicious!! You insert a half empty can of beer in the cavity of the chicken making the beer can a pedestal.( I admit to drinking half the can of beer) Then make a rub with salt, pepper, parsley oregano. YUMMMMM

My lovely grand-daughter Emery turned eleven this month and as is our tradition we went to tea at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City. The furnishings are exquisite and the whole experience is one to be savored.

I can hardly believe she is eleven. I hope this tradition lasts for many years to come!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having lunch with a few fellow bloggers. It is wonderful to meet new people and it amazes me how easily we all connected and talked so easily.
We met for lunch at Gardner Village where we shared stories and laughed so much my sides were hurting. We spent some time shopping and ended up in Anatasias Attic. It is the most lovely shop I have ever been in!

A few decades ago my husband and I took a trip to the small Danish community of Solvang. It is nestled in the St. Ynez mountains of California and the scenery is spectacular. While we were there we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and welcoming hospitality. I have never tasted such delicious pastry in my life. When it was time for us to leave we wanted a small memento of our trip. We saw some mugs with exaggerated features... a caricature. We just couldn't resist them.
They have been a part of our weekend coffee routine for years.
Now looking at them I realize they are less of a caricature and more true to life. Some people end up looking like their dogs.. we ended up looking like these mugs........

The Color Green

I like St. Patrick's Day.. not because I am Irish. Nope, I am Danish/Swedish. I like St. Patrick's day because of the color green. It happens to be my favorite color. My eyes are green, my car is green and looking through my closet I have several sweaters, blouses, bracelets and even my robe is green. I also have a delicate emerald necklace. The color just makes me happy and it signifies new growth. My lawn at the moment isn't green but it has the promise of turning green.. :)

When I was a kid my hair turned green from the chemicals in the pool..( that wasn't really a good thing though)

Girl Scout Thin Mints should be green.. don't you think?

~Mud Season~

Most people think there are only four seasons. But I believe there are five. The fifth being MUD SEASON. Meteorologically speaking it is spring but astronomically speaking it is still winter. I just call it Mud Season.

In your mind winter is over. Out the window, not exactly. You’re itching to get south to the red rock but there’s slush in the streets. You’re ready to shed some down but you’re still scraping your windshield. You know Easter is almost here, but it’s MUD SEASON.

My corner garden sits forlornly waiting for the warmth of the sun. But it will be a long, long time before that happens.. there is rain in the forecast. Yep.. Mud Season is definitely here!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

This weekend I spent some time looking at old photos and cleaning out a few drawers and the old cedar chest. I was happily sorting and stacking and digging through things when my hand came upon an old, yellowed manila envelope. It was stuck in the crevice of the cedar chest and hadn't been opened in years. Carefully removing it I slid out the contents. There before me was a faded newspaper clipping. It was my wedding announcement that had been printed in the paper. There was also a few napkins from the reception, an invitation to a wedding shower given by a good friend and the church newsletter inviting the whole congregation to the wedding. I looked at those faded scraps of paper and couldn't help but smile. I am so grateful for the love I have in my life.

I enjoyed my trip down Memory Lane.. it felt serene to linger there over a cup of tea and remember the feelings I had on that day.

~Routines~

Do you have routines that you follow on the weekends?? Do you always do the same things?? I think there is some security in having a routine.. an idea of what you are going to do. The Mister and I have had a routine, tradition ( if you will ) of stopping whatever we are doing on Saturday and Sunday to have a glass of wine. This usually occurs around 4:30 in the afternoon. We affectionately call it "wine-thirty". This has been going on for the past 15 years at least.
We discuss the events of the previous week.. make plans for the next one.
Today was one of those rare winter days when the sun was streaming in through the front windows and the sky a light blue. We sat there and the conversation drifted to planning our vacation for the summer. We talked of taking a trip to California in the Vanagon.. driving on the coast highway, visiting San Francisco, sampling wine in the Napa Valley and visiting the Muir Woods.
Naturally these plans will be revised but I love the way they start!

~Monday Musings~

Here is the question .. How many of you really like football? I mean.. are you a serious fan? With the superbowl just around the corner I thought I would ask. I for one don't see the attraction of the game. To me it is a bunch of overweight, overpaid, men playing grabass. It is hard for me to take it seriously when the only real skill involved is being a hulk. A few years ago I was invited to superbowl party and was happy to attend. It was hosted by a very good friend and I was actually looking forward to going. The best part of the whole game wasn't the defense or the offense or the game for that matter, no for me the best part were the commercials and the half time show. That is what everyone talks about the next day.. you remember the "costume mal-function" ... and the Stones playing for halftime.. but not the game.

Another question... what do you prefer, an eReader or a book??? I purchased a Kindle a few months ago and love it. It is easy to hold and there isn't any glare on the page. There are of course some books that I wouldn't want on my Kindle. But overall it is wonderful. I do think children should have the real book. They need to turn the pages, see and touch the illustrations, but most of all having a book all their own to read, and read again!

Today I went to the matinee and saw this movie. It is one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. Colin Firth is fantastic in his role as the stuttering King George. I sat mesmerized by his performance. Don't miss this one!

Last night as I sat pondering what to post I recalled a quote that one of the 5th grade teachers is having her class memorize. After a few minutes on google I found it and decided to post it. I was interrupted by the phone and came back to the computer and decided to check out one of my "blog buddies" noticing that she had just finished a new post. I was stunned to see that she had posted the exact quote that I was typing! I knew that we think alike .. but that was a little over the top.. but wait .. there's more. Earlier this week I finished the book Nineteen Minutes that deals with a school shooting. I posted that the same day she wrote about the shooting in Arizona. Her thoughts and feelings were a mirror to mine. Co-incidence ?? Maybe.. but I like to think it could be a little more. :) ( For some reason I can hear the theme music from the old "Twilight Zone series in my head). Check out her blog... ~Nineteen Minutes~

Have you ever read a book that stays with you for days after you finish it?? That is what I am experiencing now. I finished the book "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. It is about a school shooting, the trama and after-effects suffered by not only the victims families but the whole community as well. Working in an inner city school gives me a somewhat unique viewpoint of students who don't quite fit in. The pain they sometimes feel is tangible. Children can be be cruel and fragile at the same time. If this book taught me anything.. it is that we as a society need to listen more.. not only with our ears but with our hearts. The warning signs are all around.

Did you hear that whooshing sound?? I did. It is the unmistakable, collective sigh of satisfaction and relief heard round the world! Christmas is over ... and I for one am glad. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Christmas but honestly I am happy it is over. Now on to New Years. For this holiday you don't have wrap, decorate, bake, or shop for anything. You don't have to worry about what to wear... most anything goes. No special meal is required. You can serve whatever your heart desires. I plan to spend it at home.. watching a movie curled up by the fire. I doubt I will stay up to ring in the New Year.. it will come weather I do or not. :)
As for resolutions... I gave those up. Instead my hubby and I talk about the past year.. all of the important events, and small things that made us smile. We try to make a list ahead of time.. each of us separately .. and then discuss them over a glass of wine. It is amazing the things each of us remember.

Where's Waldo?

In my attempt to take a holiday photo for Christmas cards I took a few close-up shots of my tree. I felt satisfied and happy with the results. But that was just looking at the photo on the camera. I was confident they would look even better viewing them on my computer. To say the least I was in for a little surprise.
With closer inspection and better resolution I noticed my refection on the ornaments. I decided that wouldn't be a suitable image for a card...

It reminds me of the Where's Waldo puzzles from a few years ago...

~ Tis The Season ~

This week was a mixed bag of happiness, stress, tears and laughter all rolled into one. That is the challenge and joy of working at an inner city school.

Did you sleep well last night??? Some of my students don't have a bed. They sleep on the sofa or floor... and some, the cot at the shelter.

Did you have a nutritious dinner??? The majority of my students get their nutrition from the " Golden Arches" , school breakfast and lunch.
Were you read to as child?? I know most of my students will answer no. Their stories come from Sponge Bob or video games.

Yet these resilient children are a constant source of pride and amazement to me. They come to school without a coat, runny noses and sleep deprived. Yet they are eager to please and most want to learn.

Every year I have my 5th grade students memorize the Clement Moore poem The Night Before Christmas. And every year I hear the same refrain.. " Oh Mrs. H. this is too hard.. I can't do it"
And every year I respond with " You can do it.. I will help." ( I sound a bit like the old Home Depot commercial :) )
When they master the vocabulary and the phrases they beam with pride. Reciting the poem for their class and the vice principal only helps to cement their self esteem. Hearing their voices and seeing their smiles brings tears to my eyes. I am extremely proud of my students!!

Saturday Smiles

Today I had the pleasure of meeting a local blogger. Her name is Colleen and she writes mainstreetmemories.blogspot.com I have read her blog for about a year and enjoyed her writing and wit. We met at a local cafe for lunch. I have to admit I was a little nervous but figured if she was anything like her blog I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

You know the feeling you have when you meet someone and you automatically click.. that is exactly how I felt when I met her. She is charming and open, a pleasure to be with. I only wish we had taken a photo to capture the moment. We chatted and laughed for two hours over lunch. Time certainly flies when you're having fun! I look forward to many more visits.

Thanks for a great afternoon .. you are an inspiration!!

~ Three Things~

There were three things that made me smile this week. In actuality there were many more but I will just tell you about three.
First I got new snow tires for my car. Now I know that doesn't sound very exciting but believe me it is. Nothing strikes fear into me more than the prospect of driving on icy roads. The white knuckle commute to work is enough to make my stomach do flip flops. With new snow tires I feel much more secure knowing I won't be " slip slidin away ".

Second I love things that sparkle so every year I purchase a Swarovski crystal snowflake ornament. It comes in a triangular shaped box that just begs to be opened. Each year has a new and unique design. When I put those ornaments on my tree I am amazed at the beauty. They are small, lovely, works of art.

Third and speaking of art, my grand daughter painted a picture of a hummingbird for me. When I look at it a smile sneaks across my face. She is talented beyond her years and a constant source of joy!

Thanksgiving Thoughts

I was thinking today about Thanksgiving. It seems that it gets lost in all the hoopla with the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Black Friday appears to be a bigger event than spending time with friends and family. For me , Thanksgiving is a time to remember my family that is no longer here.. and how much they still mean to me. And of course all of the things that I have right now that make my life worth living.

My father taught me, by example, to make an event of the small things in life.. to live life to the fullest and enjoy the moment. I often think of him when I am doing some mundane chore and wonder what he would say to make it fun.

My mother taught me the value of friends. She was a loyal and loving person. Looking back I can see that her friends were an important part of her life. She was always doing something for someone else. I hope I can live up to the high standards she set.

My brother taught me how precious life is. His life was much too short. and much too painful.
I only wish I could have been with him longer.

I am thankful and so very proud of my son. He is a wonderful person. Of course I say this without the least bit of prejudice.. :)

My grandchildren are the light of my life. I love seeing the world through their eyes. Being with them forces me to live in the moment, and thats a very good thing!

My daughter in law is the most creative, talented person I know. She is a wonderful mother and wife.

My husband has been by my side for the past 42 years. He is my rock. I know I can count on him when the times are hard.. and he lights up the room with his wit and smile.

A.W.O.L.

Ok.. I admit I have been AWOL for a few months... AWOL being a military term meaning " away without leave". I guess that would apply to me. I do have a few reasons for my absence.. not excuses mind you.. just reasons. First and probably the most notable was the illness and subsequent death of a dear friend. She was without a doubt the most kind, caring person I have ever meet. When she died I felt such an immeasurable sense of loss. She was the type of person who always put others ahead of herself. Often to own detriment. I miss her.

On a lighter note.. and another reason is the traveling we did over the summer. The Napa Valley in California beckoned and of course we answered the call. We rode the Wine Train through the valley and it was spectacular. At times like that I wonder why we left California.

We also took the Vanagon camping! The mountains are so peaceful that I didn't want to come home. Cooking outdoors and watching the sunset in a camp chair with a glass of wine is hard to beat.

Having made it through another school year I can now rest easy.. at least one would think that would be the case. Not so with me. I still wake early.. and try as I might I cant go back to sleep.
So I have decided this is the best time to take a walk ( a very early walk).

I took my camera with me.. just in case.

I live near a golf course and this sign has always brought a smile to my face. But there should be a sign that warns you of the starlings that have built their nests in the trees that line the sidewalk. If you walk too close they will dive bomb your head. I have learned to walk on the other side of the street!

Now here is another sign I choose to ignore .....obviously I wasnt going to play a round of golf

but I wanted to capture these beautiful mountains!

I turned the corner and headed up another street. Is this the new sign for "Neighborhood Watch"??? I walked slowly past and wondered if those eyes were following me.

When I reached the corner I saw this sign. Had I been driving I could have missed it due to the leaves on the trees. I can hear the teen driver now saying " what stop sign... I didnt see it!!!"

Early mornings really are the best time of day. You never know what you will see.

Your First Bike

Do you remember your first bike? Or learning to ride a 2 wheeler?? I can still see the white bike with wide tires and training wheels, my dad trotting behind me holding on to the seat and encouraging me all the way.
For 100 second graders at my school their first bike was given to them by a non profit organization called Bikes for Kids. I had the opportunity to be a part of the give away. The organization promotes a healthy lifestyle and exercise. What better way than to give a bike to a child? They also received a helmet and a tee shirt. It was heartwarming to see the looks on their faces. They were excited and a little overwhelmed. A Boy Scout troop helped with the first riding lesson, and children were off and going.
Thanks to Bikes for Kids these 2nd graders have a new bike and possibly a new hobby!

I loved every minute of it!

The rest of the day was spent puttering in my garden and shopping. All in all it was a great day.

For several weeks there has been an incredible amount of stress and uncertainty where I work. It hasn't been a happy place to be. Deep budget cuts have to be made and the anxiety in the building is palpable. The uneasiness I have felt has brought to mind a few questions that I have been mulling over.
How would you answer these?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

If you could have ANY job in the world .. what would it be? Or would you even choose to work?

~The Birds and Bees~

These past weeks have been stressful, to say the least. There has been end of year testing, talk of summer school, and of course the ever present cloud that hangs over the school-- will I have a job next year? So to lighten my mood and possibly put things in their proper perspective I visit my family. My son, his wife and their two children live a short distance from me and they can always put a smile on my face.
Last year Matt told me he was going to raise chickens.. and then immediately set to work to build a chicken coop. I think the finished product looks better than some houses I have seen.

He purchased the baby chicks but they were too small to be outside so they spent the first few weeks in the basement bathroom. I had no idea how fast chickens grow.. but it wasn't long and they were in the coop.. laying the most delicious eggs I have ever tasted.

He plants a garden every year and grows tomatoes, corn, peppers, and squash. Oh.... and did I mention he also grows the hops to help brew his beer??

So I wasn't surprised when he told me he was going to be a bee keeper. He ordered the bees
and placed hive the corner of his garden. I can hardly want till this fall when he can harvest the honey.

I think I am ready to face the week... now that I have visited the Birds and Bees!

Irrespressible

That is how I would describe Spring!
Even the storms know they won't last long.. Mother Nature will eventually win out.. and things will green up!

One sign of Spring is the return of the lawn mower to the garage. The snow blower has lost it's place of honor and is now residing in the basement!

The bird bath has once again been placed in the garden. It wasn't long before a very energetic robin was frolicking in the water. Unfortunately I wasn't able to capture that action.

The garden gnomes have found their outdoor home once again. Their mirthful presence always brings a smile to my face

A few shrubs have started to bloom... I can hardly wait for more!

~Bucket List~

Last week while watching the local news there was a human-interest story featuring an 80+-year-old woman who was diagnosed with terminal melanoma. She was at peace with her fate but had one last thing she wanted to do before she died.. SKY DIVE!!! Her friends and family chipped in and paid for her adventure. Watching her leap from the plane made my heart skip a beat. When she floated back to Earth and landed safely on the ground he face was aglow. She was smiling and actually laughing. This small story made me ponder what I would like to do. A “Bucket List” if you will.

First off let me say that skydiving WON’T be on my list. The mere thought of jumping from a plane scares the living daylights out of me. My list is little more down to Earth.

1. I have always said that I want to dance at my grandchildren’s wedding. Now mind you I am not a great dancer so a few lessons may be needed. I do want to dance.. not make a complete fool of myself. The kids are only 9 and 7 so I have a few years to master moving across the dance floor without falling :)
2. I would like to take a long road trip across the country seeing the back roads and small towns.. not just the interstate highway. Seeing the East Coast in the fall with its spectacular colors and covered bridges has long been a dream of mine. The Statue of Liberty is also a must for me. She is such an iconic figure.. I can hardly wait to see her in person. I realize this will take a long time and require a lot of planning but I know it would be well worth it.

3. I also want to witness the Northern Lights. They are both magical and mystical. I can only imagine what it must be like to see this curtain of color. I hope someday I have the opportunity!

4. Finally I want to use my passport. I have had if for a few years and never had the chance to use it. I don’t mean jump across the border into Tijuana and have a watered down Margarita .. NO! I want to see and explore another country. I’m not a big fan of air travel these days, so the idea of being poked, prodded, scanned and searched just to board a plane holds no appeal for me. The country I would like to see is Canada. The photos I have seen are simply gorgeous. Driving there would be an adventure!

*** I know seeing the Northern Lights would require air travel.. I may have to reconsider my feelings on that :)

Not A Typical Easter

Religious holidays weren’t celebrated as such in my family. The reason being, my father was an atheist, and my mother was raised in a traditional religious atmosphere. They would tease, challenge, and chide each other on their beliefs. But in the end their love and devotion superceded their differences. Easter was usually celebrated with an Easter egg hunt and a family dinner.

This Easter my mother decided she would like to go to church and I wanted to go with her. We went shopping for the perfect Easter attire. After several failed attempts, I found a beautiful dress. It was light blue satin with layers of netting at the waist. When I tried it on I felt like a princess. Mother’s dress was white, sleeveless with a mandarin collar and a straight skirt that fell just below her knees. It had a multicolored sash for a belt. She looked elegant when she slipped into it.

Easter morning brought bright sunshine. It was a gorgeous day. The kind of day that Southern California is famous for. Warm temperatures and traces of the early morning dew lingered on the lawn. The air was thick with the fragrance of spring flowers.

I awoke to the aroma of coffee brewing and my mother and father talking at the table. Ambling into the kitchen I had a glass of juice and a piece of toast. I was too excited to eat more than that. Mom smiled and winked at me and suggested she comb my hair. It was soft and curly and to me it felt like silk. After she styled her hair we both got dressed. Twirling in the mirror I saw my mother’s reflection behind me. She looked beautiful.

When we walked into the living room my father gave a short whistle and smiling he said, “ This calls for a picture”. He found the camera after a few moments and made sure there was sufficient film. The best place for the photo was the backyard. He hated posed photos and wanted a more natural look. Following his directions we didn’t look at the camera but rather, at each other. After several shots he was convinced he had captured the perfect image.

Returning to the house and looking at the clock Mom realized it was almost time to leave. She was never one to be late for anything. On time for her was usually ten minutes early. She was surprised to hear Dad mention he had time to give the car a quick wash before we left. He filled a bucket with soapy water, got a chamois and started to hose down the car. We soon realized this wasn’t going to be just a quick wash. Dad noticed Mom pacing in the driveway and said, “ You could always take the truck”. She answered curtly, “We will”. Her voice on the edge of anger. While he liked how we looked, he really didn’t want us to go. This was his way of discouraging us from doing so or at the very least, testing her resolve. He reached into his pocket, took out the keys and gently tossed them to her. She snatched them from the air, turned and walked down the driveway to the street where the truck was parked. The frustration she felt was no match for her determination.

The truck was a work truck in every sense of the word. On the passenger side there were pipe racks attached to both the front and rear bumpers. The racks were loaded with twelve-foot lengths of pipe, ready for the coming week. This made access from the passenger side impossible. The bed of the truck was filled with small lengths of pipe, pipe fittings and tools. The exterior was a mixture of black paint, rust and dust. The windshield had the remains of a few unfortunate flies and insects.

Approaching the truck I realized I would have to slide across the front seat, something I didn’t want to do. I went back to house and grabbed a large towel for us to sit on. I slid across the seat; Mom got in and turned the key. The engine whined in protest as if being awakened from a sound sleep. After another try it started reluctantly. Putting the truck in gear we lurched down the street. I could hear my mother muttering “ Just a quick wash job” and “You could always take the truck.” I looked at her and we both started to laugh.

Pulling into the lot we noticed there wasn’t a parking space to be had. The once a year churchgoers had filled the lot. We ended up parking half a block away. In retrospect I don’t think my mother minded. No one would see her unsightly mode of transportation.

Entering the church I was stunned by the beauty. Sunlight coming through the stained glass windows cast a soft glow. There were lilies on the altar and at every pew. Candles were flickering and organ music playing. I don’t recall the sermon, only how I felt. I knew this was a special day. Even then. It was the first, last ..the only time I ever went to church with my mother.

Happy Spring~~
Today is the first day of spring.. I can hardly believe it. The headache that has tormented me for the past week has finally subsided. I had almost forgotten what it feels like to be without pain. I walked out into the backyard and looked at my garden. The skeletal remains of the trees looked lonely against the blue sky and a few courageous viola's have poked their heads through the moist soil. All in all a perfect first day of Spring.

Love & Fear

Love and fear.. emotions that can elicit strong actions. Can you love someone and at the same time fear that person? For me the answer is yes.

That person was my brother.
He was capable of intense emotions on both ends of the scale.
He could be tender, kind and caring and funny.
But when drugs controlled him he was capable of great violence.
There were times when I feared not only for myself but for those around me.

When he died I felt an almost overwhelming sense of loss. I not only mourned the loss of life but the loss of "what could have been". His death was ruled an accidental drug overdose but I don't believe that. I feel it was suicide. He often told me he had nothing to live for.. he wasn't afraid to die.

Shortly before his death we had a chance to meet and talk. He told me he loved me ... and he was sorry for all the pain he had caused.
Looking back I think he was saying goodbye. Of course I didnt realize that. Hind sight is always 20/20.

It is amazing how often I think of him..
I miss being someone's little sister.

Blast From the Past

The Trip To Bountiful

Bus travel has never been the most comfortable or safest mode of transportation but it has always been affordable. It was for this reason that in the summer of 1963 my best friend Veta and I made the trek from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. My aunt and uncle had extended an invitation and they were delighted when we accepted. I was surprised that my mother agreed to let me go. She was convinced some disaster would befall two 14-year-old girls traveling alone. My father on the other hand was an adventurous sort and was certain we would survive. After weeks of planning and countless instructions (don’t talk to strangers… stick together… keep your money in your sock) we were ready for our big adventure.

Veta had dark brown hair with auburn highlights that shone brightly in the sun. The freckles that adorned her face contrasted her blue eyes and fair skin. She was my closest friend; my confidant and we were inseparable.

When we arrived at the bus station it was the middle of the afternoon. The July sun was streaming in the windows but the smoke filled room filtered the light. The waiting area was crowded with people buying tickets, children playing on the floor, and adults sitting, waiting, and staring aimlessly. I was suddenly hit with a pang of fear. What if something really DID happen to us? Would we be okay? Veta was also feeling a bit anxious. When I looked at her she managed a half smile and said, “I guess we are really doing this.” And I quietly replied, “ I guess we are.” But before I could say anything else Dad was handing us our tickets. Walking through the terminal I was given one last word of advice from my mother. She very seriously said, “ If anyone gives you a hard time or bothers you.. tell them the bus driver is your uncle.” That sounded like a foolproof plan and it put my mind at ease. I won’t ever forget my Mother’s face when we boarded the bus and there, sitting in the drivers seat, was a very large black man. I looked at her and shrugged my shoulders. She started to laugh and so did I. We made our way down the isle and found an empty seat near the middle of the bus. The seats were a worn dark green vinyl, and the padding had long ago ceased to be comfortable. The large windows were in dire need of a wash job. I saw my parents, mom in her capri shorts and pink blouse, and dad in his khaki pants and green shirt, and waved as we pulled out into the sunshine. Our adventure had begun.

The symbol of the bus line was a Greyhound dog. I am confident this was to give the impression of speedy travel. But nothing could be further from the truth. We stopped at every small town, and after the first 100 miles they all looked the same. Arriving in Las Vegas we were ready to stretch our legs. Walking into the terminal the acrid smell of sweat, cigarette smoke and alcohol was overpowering. The slot machines that lined one wall looked like an army of tin soldiers waiting for orders. An old woman clutched a paper cup filled with nickels, hoping for a huge jackpot. Her eyes darted furtively between two machines, trying to decide which would be the best one to play. A young man sat hunkered down like a dog in a thunderstorm, reading the bus schedule. After a brisk walk around the terminal we once again took our seats on the bus. Two new passengers also boarded. One was an older woman, grandmotherly in her appearance. Her salt and pepper hair was pulled back in a bun. She had a kind smile and dark brown eyes that sparkled. She struggled down the isle with her huge purse. I am sure that by today’s standards it would be considered too large to be a carry-on on an airplane. She let out a sigh as she breathlessly plopped down on the seat in front of us. Immediately she turned around and said hello. She told us she was going to Salt Lake City to visit relatives. The second passenger was a tall middle-aged man. His clothes were wrinkled and dirty. His dark blonde hair was stringy and partially covered his sad gray eyes. In his hand was a small brown paper bag that contained his liquid luggage. He staggered down the isle and collapsed in the seat behind us. Once again the engine moaned and we were on the road again.

As we settled back in our seats the woman in front of us opened her cavernous purse and pulled out homemade cookies. When she offered them to us we eagerly accepted. We thanked her and chatted for a few moments before she lit a cigarette and began reading. The man behind us started an alcohol-induced monologue. At first he was only mumbling but his voice grew steadily louder. Without an appreciative audience he changed his tactics. Removing his shoes he sang louder.. and then with no warning placed his foul smelling feet between us, next to my head. I was at first stunned by his actions, then a little afraid. Noticing what he did, the woman in front of us sprang into action like a tenacious pit bull. Without any hesitation she put the hot end of her cigarette on the soul of his smelly foot. He let out a pain filled “OUCH” and quickly moved his feet. That sobering experience kept him quiet for the rest of the journey.

Through the night we talked and laughed, read and slept. When we arrived in Salt Lake the following morning we bid a fond farewell to the lady with the cookies and regaled my aunt and uncle with our stories as they drove us to their home in Bountiful.

Possessions

What are the things you hold most dear? Why?

Do they remind you of a special person, a place you visited, or a specific time in your life?

I have a few such things.

One is a ring that belonged to my mother. It is a square black onyx ring with a small diamond in the center. It was given to her by my father shortly after they were married. As the story goes they were window shopping in San Francisco when they passed a jewelry store. There in the display case was this classic ring. My mother loved the simplicity and elegance. A few days later my father returned to the store and purchased the ring much to her surprise. She wore it constantly. Years later when her hands were misshapen by rheumatoid arthritis and she was no longer able to wear it she gave it to me. I treasure this small black piece of the past. I can still see it on her finger as she would cradle a cup of coffee or delicately light a cigarette. If I close my eyes I can almost hear her voice. Isn't it amazing the power that this small piece of jewelry holds?

Another valued possession is a table that belonged to my mother's mother. She used that table for tea parties and card games. I am not sure of its origin... only that is was inherited by my family. The table folds out to seat four adults comfortably. It was used for our holiday celebrations... birthdays... Christmas.... Thanksgiving. Today that table sits in my house and is used for the very same celebrations. I think that my mother and grand mother would be pleased to see that old table still in use.

I can't help but wonder what my son and his family will hold dear in the years to come..

This week marks an important event for me. It is my 42nd wedding anniversay. I sat today thinking of all the changes and differences between then and now. There were no cell phones, personal computers, microwave ovens, or GPS systems. Seatbelts weren't common in most cars and there weren't any restraints for children. It amazes me that my generation even survived childhood. We rode bikes without wearing a helmet and went roller skating without knee pads. Soccer wasn't popular in the United States.. Baseball was the game of choice.

1968 was a very tumultuous time. We were engaged in an unpopular war. My generation found it's voice and was vehemently opposed to this war. Our protests were large, loud and got the attention of the world. Sound familiar??

There were protests at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and during the Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

We lost Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy to assassin's bullets. People saw in them a promise of a better world... and those promises were taken away in an instant.

Our country seemed to be at war with itself.

The news magazine 60 Minutes made it's debut in 1968 and is still being produced today.

Rowan and Martin's Laugh In also debuted in 1968. It was characterized by political humor, gags, and sketches. At the time they pushed the limits of what was considered acceptable. Now viewing those same shows they seem very tame.

So what does all this mean... I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

We are all searching for peace.

I love Sundays. The housework is done and I can sleep in.. well sort of. My idea of sleeping in is to get up around 6:00. I know I can hear the gasps now.. 6:00 isnt sleeping in.. it's still dark outside! But for me it is heaven. This morning I got up and made some cinnamon rolls. Amanda and the kids were coming over for breakfast and I wanted to make their favorites.
Amanda brought some fresh eggs straight from her chickens. They range in color from a light tan to an amazing shade of green. ( the eggs.. not the chickens) On Easter they won't even have to color eggs.

After breakfast Quinn challenged his sister to a game of checkers. I think, from the look on his face he is trying to think of a new rule to justify his next move.

Even my two cats seemed to enjoy the day.

I am ready for the coming week.

Change is difficult.

We all resist it.

We like things the way are.. or at the very least we have learned to live with them.

This week started with stunning news at my school... the principal is being transferred to another school effective next week.
This change effects the faculty, staff, parents and students.

Meanwhile the legislature is meeting and deciding what our future will be..

These are interesting times.

Soooo.. I have to remember my resolution and not worry about things that I have
absolutely no control over.

That is what I do at my monthly book/wine club.We meet once a month to discuss a book or to sample and learn about wine. However we are much more than just a club. We share our triumphs and tragedies our pain and pleasure. We are diverse in our beliefs, age and occupations. I look on this group of women as my extended family and I cherish their company.
Our book for this past month was Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It is a novel set in China in the 19th century. The customs and traditions described in the book are historically accurate and heartbreaking. It made me extremely grateful for the culture that I was raised in. I recommend this book, but be aware it is deeply moving and sorrowful.

One of the members of our club recently opened a cafe called Paush. It is a delightful place to have a cup of coffee, a deli sandwich or a dessert.

A New Year

Happy New Year

Today was one of those rare January days.. the temperature was actually ABOVE
freezing! I took a long invigorating walk. There wasn’t an ounce of ice
on the sidewalks and kids were outside playing. Now I know this isn’t
going to last long.. ( After all Mother Nature can be very fickle this
time of year .. especially in Utah) The sun was shining and the sky a
bright blue, the smog is gone and with it the perma-frost that was my
driveway.

It is amazing to me what just a little sunshine will do to lift my
spirits. Mother Nature at her very best!
The lake on the golf course is still frozen and looks beautiful.

This is also the time of year when people make New Years Resolutions. As
for me I have but one. It is to try to keep a positive mental attitude.
Not to worry about the things I can’t change and to have more faith in
my destiny. The time spent worrying is time that is robbed from the “now”.

The Festivus Sweater

December birthdays are difficult because it is hard to compete with all the holiday celebrations. So this year instead of a party with cake and ice cream for my husband’s birthday I opted to serve brunch. French toast, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, juice and coffeecake rounded out the menu.
Matt and Amanda and the kids arrived with smiles and bearing gifts. They were anxious to get the festivities started and wanted to have Larry open his gifts right away. Larry suggested that he wait until after we ate but they insisted.

(At this point I have to tell you what Matt did the previous day. He and Amanda were invited to an “Ugly Sweater” party. Matt scoured the thrift shops searching for the ugliest sweater in the Salt Lake Valley. He didn’t stop until he found “the sweater”. It still had the price tag on it from the original store. Some poor man actually received this sweater as a gift but fortunately he had the good sense to give it away! When Matt walked into the party wearing “the sweater” the rest of the contestants conceded. He won!)

Okay.. back to the brunch.

Emery and Quinn insisted. “ Papa please open your gifts” How could he refuse?

Matt and Amanda handed him a beautifully wrapped package and he carefully started to open it. I wish I had had my camera ready because the look on his face was priceless. In fact for a few seconds he was speechless. Then slowly he formed the words..” ohhhhhhh … a… sweater”

Unable to contain himself any longer, Matt burst out laughing and was finally able to say, “Dad, Dad, it’s a joke”. The relief on my husband’s face was visible. He good-naturedly put on the sweater and wore it for the rest of the morning. After opening the rest of his gifts we sat down to eat. I kept staring at him in that god-awful sweater and I couldn’t help but laugh.

When Christmas Eve arrived we were invited to spend it with Matt and Amanda. Larry asked me what he should wear.. And I said (as a joke)

“ Why don’t you wear your new sweater?’
To my surprise… HE DID

And so.. The Festivus Sweater was born.. I am afraid that it will be visible in the Christmas photo’s from now on.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas~

Yesterday marked the last of school before the long (?) Christmas holiday. My groups have been working on memorizing the Clement Moore poem “The Night Before Christmas”. When the assignment was first given it was met with cries of “ I cant do that” or “It’s too hard” or “ Do we have to?” But with practice and persistence they mastered the poem.
The Literacy Facilitator asked if one group would like to perform it during the Christmas sing a long. When I approached the 4 boys with this idea I was cautiously optimistic, hoping they would agree. It is one thing to recite a poem for your teacher and quite another to perform for the whole school. To my delight they agreed. We only had one day to polish their performance, but they were eager to make it as good as possible. I reminded them to look at the audience, not the ceiling, to keep the hands folded in front of them., and not race through it. I wanted everyone to understand what they were saying.

Then the unthinkable happened. One of the boys was suspended from school for fighting.
Without all four boys there was no way they could pull it off.
The vice principal told me Brian would be able to return to school on Wednesday if he served his suspension that day.

I kept my fingers crossed, and sure enough Wednesday morning he was back at school ready and willing to perform.
The classes were called down the gym and all the students were seated on the floor. They were wiggily and squirmy, and excited. The school choir started the assembly with a few songs, then first grades, and then it was our turn. The boys were called to the stage and I took a seat facing them. I told them I would help them if they got stuck and couldn’t remember their lines. The principal handed them the microphone and they began. It was music to my ears. They never missed a beat. Their voices were loud and clear and they enjoying every minute of it.
When they finished the whole school applauded! I will never forget the look on their faces. It was mixture of pride, relief, and joy. Wiping the tears from my eyes I walked back to my seat and winked at them and they smiled back at me.

Sooo.. to borrow a phrase from the poem

Unsettled

This morning I planned to start my marathon wrapping day. Scissors? Check! Tape? Check! Paper? Check! Gift tags? Check! Boxes? Ahhh.. that is when I discovered I needed some gift boxes. A quick trip to All A Dollar would solve the problem. When I entered the store I was immediately aware of 3 boys ranging in age from about 7 to 10 years of age. They were running through the store taking things off the shelves, screaming, and generally being a nuisance. I couldn’t help but wonder where on earth their mother was. Surely she would reprimand them for their behavior. I soon learned that wouldn’t happen.

After a quick search of the store I found my boxes and got in line to check out. The store was busy but only one checker was working. A lady behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I had noticed the “wild bunch” in the store. I couldn’t help but smile and said I had. She told me their mother was right behind her in line and was completely ignoring their behavior. Then things got a little more heated. Another customer mentioned the boys’ behavior and the mother called her a bitch. She said that her boys weren’t doing anything wrong and for her mind her own business. She told her boys there were “ nasty women” in the store, completely absolving them of any responsibility for their actions. The name calling escalated and the young children were taking it all in.
After paying for my boxes I turned to the mother and just stared at her. She stared back .. but only for a moment and then said in a somewhat angry voice.. “ Whaaaattt???”
I had so many things I wanted to say.. but the words failed me. I couldn’t believe that an adult would act in such a juvenile manner. It made me sad.. especially for those boys. If they act that way in a store I can only imagine how they behave in school.. or at home. This mother was clearly not equipped to handle these children… and the worst thing was… she has no idea the effect she has on them.
I left feeling unsettled..

Thanksgiving is over.. and now the mad dash to December 25th is on. The crazed shopping.. the cooking .. the wrapping.. the cards.
I was thinking today what makes the holidays so appealing, and for me it is the traditions. There is comfort in traditions.

Decorating the tree and sharing a glass of wine.

Opening one gift on Christmas Eve.. ( this was started when my son very little.. he was so excited ..)

Making small loaves of Pumpkin bread for the neighbors.

Shopping with my daughter in law on Black Friday.

Writing the Christmas cards in front of the fire place
.
Making cinnamon pull-aparts for Christmas morning.

Driving downtown to look at the lights.

Buying one special ornament for the tree each year.

Making cookies with my grand kids.

Having Champagne and Pizza by the fire on New Years Eve.

About this time last year I was taking a writing class. This was one of my assignments. I thought it was a fitting thing to post.. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fowl Play

This turkey scared me. He was a lifeless, headless, featherless, frozen mass of meat wrapped in plastic and netting that I purchased from my grocery store. He was my first Thanksgiving turkey at a whopping 23 pounds!
My husband and I had only been married 8 months and were living in northern California. In my naïve nineteen-year-old mind I planned to cook Thanksgiving dinner for my in-laws who were driving the 400 miles from southern California. A complete novice, I was nervous about preparing this meal by myself, but I wanted to impress them.
We would be eating in our apartment which was a furnished two bedroom. It was small but comfortable. The carpet was avocado green shag, typical of the 1960’s. The sofa and chair were upholstered in a skin-chaffing brown fabric that I am sure is still in use today. The no-frills kitchen featured “apartment size” appliances, (which means the stove and refrigerator were noticeably downsized). I often wondered if there was a special section in the grocery store for “apartment size “ food.
A week before the big day I went shopping. At first I hadn’t planned on buying such a large turkey, but I had this Norman Rockwell image in my head of a huge browned turkey with steaming vegetables, and luscious pumpkin pie. Somehow a small turkey just wouldn’t do. Reality hit when I realized that the turkey wouldn’t fit in the freezer. After re-arranging most of the contents of the refrigerator he was placed on the top shelf. He would remain perched there for the next few days, like a sentinel guarding the milk and eggs.
I scoured my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook for recipes and instructions on what exactly to serve and how to achieve the dinner I had in mind, When I read that I needed to stuff and truss, I was confused. Stuff I understood, but truss caused some concern. I thought truss was some sort of roof support. After reading the dictionary I learned it also meant to bind or tie, and I felt some relief. Skewers, a meat thermometer, and a turkey baster were also needed. When these items were assembled, it seemed to me that they looked more like they belonged in Dr. Frankenstein’s lab than in my kitchen.
Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, arrived and so did my in-laws Betty and Glenn. Their excitement and enthusiasm filled the room. After a quick tour of our apartment we settled into chatting about family and the friends we left in southern California. They filled us in on all the news. The conversation naturally turned to the festivities for the following day.
Betty was sweet and thoughtful and wanted to help in any way she could. I was glad to have her advice on the whole stuff and truss thing. We wrestled the turkey from his perch and placed him in the sink. After removing the plastic wrap and netting I lifted him up and he did a sort-of “turkey trot” Giggling, Betty said, “ What army did you invite?” Laughingly I replied, “ No army, just the four of us.” I consulted my cookbook once again for the dressing recipe. After chopping, sautéing, mixing and seasoning, the dressing was done. I stuffed the bird and Betty worked her magic with the skewers. We both stood back and admired our handiwork. He was a vision of beauty! I wrapped him in a blanket of aluminum foil and he was returned to the top shelf.
Gray skies and cool temperatures greeted me the next morning. Leafless trees moved in unison, dancing to a concert given by the breeze. I was still enjoying the view from the window when my husband wandered into the kitchen. He kissed me lightly on the cheek and whispered, “Good morning. Are you ready for the big day?” Smiling at him I replied, “I think so.” Anxious, I walked to oven, set the temperature to 350 degrees and pressed BAKE. Nothing happened. I pressed it again, only harder this time. Still nothing! Frantic, I flicked on the burners. They were functioning just fine, but the oven was useless… cold… dead. My turkey was all trussed up and had nowhere to go. The Norman Rockwell image evaporated as fast as a summer rain. It was quickly replaced with one of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup and saltine crackers. With my mind racing for a solution, a plan quickly evolved. My neighbor across the hall had an invitation for dinner and wouldn’t be using her oven. Shaking nervously, I dialed her number and explained my dilemma. She happily agreed to help and ten minutes later the turkey was wedged in a warm oven where he would remain for the next seven hours.
The rest of the day was spent between the two apartments. Placing the meal on the table was like choreographing a ballet. Rolls needed to be heated, side dishes warmed and gravy made. When we finally sat down to dinner I was both relieved and happy. The once feared turkey was now a golden brown centerpiece that adorned the small but festive table. Laughter and expressions of gratitude filled the air. On that day, I was most thankful for a friend with an oven that worked!

One Of Those Days

Have you ever had one of those days??
Monday was one of those for me.
I had to leave work unexpectedly and adding insult to injury my car wouldn’t start. I called my husband to come and get me and being the fix-it guy that he is he was able to get it going.
As bad as Monday was.. Tuesday was the exact opposite. I was feeling better, and glad to be back at work. On my way to lunch I stopped to check my mail box.. And there inside was a plain brown paper bag. Inside the bag was some turquoise blue tissue. Removing that.. I found 3 lovely handmade dishcloths and a hand towel that matched. A very sweet note was also included. Then I remembered a conversation I had had early on Monday with Bridgette. She asked what colors I had in my kitchen.. I told her and quickly dismissed the inquiry. Now I know the reason she asked. The dishcloths and towel compliment my kitchen perfectly. When I use them I will think of her fondly.

Her unexpected, generous and spontaneous act of kindness did more than I can say..

Thank you Bridgette.. :)

My Latest Addiction

Earlier this year, perhaps late May, my friend Cathy and I went to lunch. We wanted to go out for a quick bite but there aren’t any places close to school, so we settled on the deli in Harmons. (A local grocery store) Their food is surprisingly good and reasonably priced. I was looking at the salads and Cathy mentioned their Spring Rolls were delicious. We agree to split an order. After purchasing our lunch we made our way to the seating area of the store.It's not fancy, just functional.
I had no idea what deliciousness awaited me. The rolls are filled with shrimp, cucumber, shredded lettuce,
carrots and cream cheese, all wrapped in a delicate rice paper. There is a tangy, kind of carrot marmalade dipping sauce served on the side. One bite and I was hooked. They are light and filling and totally scrumptious.
Now, months later as I am wandering in the store doing my weekly shopping I find myself being irresistibly pulled toward the deli department. I quickly scan the case and there they are, much to my delight.. Spring Rolls!
I slipped them in my cart and all the way home I was thinking about lunch..( this was at 8:30 in the morning)

The only problem now… should I share them???

It Caused Me to Think

Last week was emotional for me.. I said to goodbye to an Uncle.. and that fact caused me to think of my own father. When he died he didn't recognize me or the rest of the family. Alzhiemers disease robbed him of his memories and his personality. I wrote this and read it at his service.

I miss the twinkle in your eye-
I miss your infectious laugh
I miss the wisdom of your words,
And the way you lived your life.

You made the world a better place

Today I celebrated the life and mourned the loss of my uncle Duane.. the last of “those Mattsson boys”. I am not quite sure who coined this phrase but.. it was used often and affectionately in our family. He was the youngest of 6 brothers..(And one sister) all fiercely loyal to family and incredibly independent.

Individually and collectively they were a force to be reckoned with. Stories of their adventures and exploits would abound at family gatherings.

They were well educated, well traveled and well read.

They could make you laugh till you cried.. and oddly make cry till you laughed.

Duane loved a good joke, and he would wager on most anything!

I will think of you fondly and often Duane,

Tea Time

We moved into our present home in October of 2000 and in that time we have re-painted.. re-carpeted –and
re-done most every room in the house. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when, this past weekend, my husband found a box that somehow escaped the unpacking frenzy of 9 years ago. The box was labeled “miscellaneous glassware”. Little did I know the treasures it held. There were some serving bowls and 6 beer glasses that had belonged to my dad. (My son will be the recipient of those since he is the master brewer of the family) Wrapped in plain white tissue paper was a small, delicate tea service that once belonged to my grandmother. I am not sure of its
origin. It could have been a dime store bargain or a department store special. The teapot, sugar bowl and creamer were intact but sadly there is only one teacup and three saucers. I remember seeing this in my grandmother’s china cabinet when, as a child I would visit her home in central Utah. When we arrived she would dash down the front steps.. half- crying and half-laughing. She would wipe the tears of joy from her eyes on her ever-present apron and say “Oh God love ya” Then she would plaster us all with kisses and we would wear her lipstick for the rest of day.

I adored my grandmother. She was light-hearted and fun to be with. She would occasionally visit us in California. She planned to stay for a week or two but ended up spending the whole summer, and I loved every minute of her visit. She would make cakes and rootbeer, and then I would host a party for all my friends with her home-made goodies. My mother was delighted to have her there. They would pick fresh oranges from the orchards near our home, buy vegetables from the man who sold them from his truck and play cards in the afternoon.

Now, years later, that small tea set sits in my china cabinet and it can spark nostalgic tears. Memories can at times be bittersweet. The next time I have a tea party with my grand-daughter she will hear all about her great, great grandmother and we will use the delicate little tea set that she loved.

On my 50th birthday Larry gave me a very special gift.. a 1973 Mercedes Benz 450 SL convertible. It was the very definition of class on wheels. We were at a car show at UVCC in early May and saw this champagne Benz. The best part of the car was (in my opinion) the for sale sign. After a lengthy discussion about price, and the impractical aspects of buying a 2 seater.. we decided to go ahead and purchase it. We polished it… replaced the wheels and tires… put in a killer sound system.. and then thoroughly enjoyed it. We drove through the mountains in the fall with the top down… we cruised the city streets, and the neighborhoods. In the summer we would take early morning excursions and watch the sunrise. It was a delightful experience. However there was some limiting factors. The car was never driven in the winter. It was purchased solely for fair weather driving. That being the case it spent a lot of time in the garage.
During this time period Matt and Amanda purchased a 1983 VW Vanagon Westfalia. It is complete with a small kitchen and sleeping space for four. This is the vehicle they always wanted. Amanda once told me that she and Matt would scan the parking lots of REI and Kirkhams hoping to find one with a for sale sign, but when that strategy failed they found one on Ebay! Matt and a friend flew to California and drove it back home. It wasn’t long before they wanted us to go camping with them. We had a tent and happily agreed. (But I have to admit I was a bit envious of their nice beds).
Then it happened.. Matt invited Larry to go camping with him in the Deep Creek Mountains of western Utah. I had no idea of the impact this innocent camping adventure would have. They were gone for 3 short days but in that time Larry had fallen in love with the Vanagon. He told me of the convenience of cooking, the comfort of sleeping and the ease of driving. He would remark “ When I was camping with Matt I slept so well” and “ It’s not a big motor home, we could park it in the garage” and of course “ We could travel all over.” With his persistence it wasn’t long before I was actually thinking about traveling in a Vanagon. However, in order to do that we would have to sell the Benz. That proved to be more emotional than difficult. Friends of ours purchased it and when they drove away I felt a pang of sadness as I watched it disappear into the night.
The next task was to find a suitable Westie. We checked Pop Top Heaven, this is a company based in California that restores Vanagon’s, and they charge accordingly. I thought I would check the local ads on-line. There, somewhat hidden between behemoth motor homes and gigantic trailers was an ad for a 1991 Westie. There weren’t any pictures so we could only guess its condition. After talking to the owner on the phone we decided to drive to Logan to check it out. It was a gray, rainy day but that didn’t dampen our excitement. When we first laid eyes on the Vanagon it was difficult to contain our enthusiasm. The exterior had a few dents but the interior was pristine. The owner said he always meant to go camping but never got around to it. After a test drive and the usual questions we made the decision to purchase it. That was 2 years ago and there hasn’t been one moment of regret.
We have camped in the rugged Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho and toured the majestic peaks of the San Juan range in Colorado. We have seen the back roads and taken time to explore small towns. Making s’mores over a campfire and sharing them with my grandchildren is a treat. Whether it is playing a game of horseshoes with my son, or watching the sunset in the desert, these are all experiences I cherish!

Both of those vehicles are German made.. but that is where the similarity ends.
One says “ You’ve Arrived”
The other says, “Let’s Go”

Channeling Your Inner Diva

Saturday night we celebrated Amanda’s birthday. We were all invited to Cupcake Diva’s. It is a quaint little shop that specializes in cupcakes and coffee. Entering the shop you see the service counter and a few tables.. but after further exploration a lovely patio is reveled. There were about 15 of us and it seems we took over the entire patio. After a chorus of Happy Birthday Amanda opened her many gifts. She was surrounded by those who love her. Let me just say that she is an amazing person. With all that she does, I don’t know how she manages to keep it all together. She cooks, she sews, she takes care of not only her family but 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 4 chickens and works full time. In her spare time she is in training for the St. George Marathon.

Color Me.....

It's time to color my hair once again. The gray roots have taken over my head. I suppose I have been conditioned by today's society to cover that gray. But if every woman who had gray hair just refused to color it, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

I remember my hair as a child.. it was long and blond. What happened to those blond follicles? Did they die??? Or were they pre-programmed to change color?? In my late 20's I had light brown hair, but soon after the birth of my son my hair started to turn gray.(Is there a connection there???) At first I didn't mind that too much because it looked like I had high-lights in my hair. But that was a short lived phenomena. It wasn't long before I was searching out a salon to cover my quickly changing locks. Now.. decades later I am still doing that. Vanity? Yes! Fear? Yes!
But who knows... one of these days I just may decide to go gray.

Whew~~~ the first full week of school is over! It was filled with equal amounts of anxiety, laughter and confusion ( and that was just from the teachers)! The two story brick building is 50+ years old and isn't air conditioned. With temperatures in the high 90's it made for a very warm welcome. Above the omnipresent hum of fans students could be heard saying "I hope we can sit next to each other" and " When is recess?" and of course "What's for lunch?"
Next week I start my own reading groups. I am looking forward to meeting my 20 charges and getting to know them. Fifth graders keep me on my toes with their honesty and curiosity.
Their world is very different from the one I grew up in. I learned to read with Dick and Jane. The pastel illustrations and simple stories were more idealistic than realistic. I didn't have the benefit of a computer lab or the distraction of video games. Books fed my imagination.
I wonder if, when my students are older they will remember the pages in a book, or a web page.... I hope it's a book!!

35 and 7

This week marked two momentous occasions. My son turned 35 and my grandson 7. The celebration included dinner with family and friends and of course cake, pie and ice cream.

Tears welled in my eyes as I sat watching the wrapping paper being ripped off the packages and I couldn't help but remember birthday celebrations from years gone by. Noise-makers, cupcakes and the laughter of the neighborhood children filled the air as they played tag in the yard.
Those birthday parties marked the end of summer. School would start shortly and the long, fun filled days would end. I can still see my son's blond hair flying in the breeze as he ran through the sprinklers and the ever present deafening noise of his Big Wheel practically flying down the driveway.

And now.. there is a blond 7 year old boy playing laser tag in the yard with his Dad. He is smart and playful and has the charm to wrap any adult around his little finger.
I look forward to many more of these birthday celebrations~

Sooo... here goes. The first post on my blog. A blog is defined in the dictionary as an on-line diary. But when I think of a diary the first thought that comes to mind is a small flowered book with lined pages usually secreted away in the back of a drawer. The contents hold feelings and wishes that the author would rather not share. A small lock and key seem to make this all the more private. But here, there is no lock , no key.. just feelings and memories. A friend of mine once told me .. when you feel something write it down and then share it. So here I am, doing just that. Who knows, when I get the picture thingy figured out I will post a few photos. :)

"Breezy" has been my on-line identity ( if you will ) for almost 11 years. The reason I choose it goes back to a very special gift. It was a beautiful chestnut colored quarter horse. She was described as being able to run faster than the breeze.. and was therefore named "Breezy".
I loved the name and soon realized it fit her well. Riding her was pure delight. Freedom! Years later when my husband and I purchased a 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible the perfect vanity plate was of course Breezy. Driving that car I had the same sensation.. Freedom!
